Localized Heavy Downpours in the South Followed by Nationwide Rain This Weekend

Today, August 27, was another sweltering day.

For days, South Korea has been under the edge of the North Pacific High, bringing in hot and humid air.

Amidst this, strong southerly winds are blowing in from the south, triggering localized heavy downpours across various parts of the southern regions today.

Tomorrow, these southerly winds are expected to intensify slightly, expanding the rain as far north as the Chungcheong and southern regions, while rain will fall nationwide over the weekend.

However, the nature of the rain expected tomorrow and over the weekend will differ slightly.

First, until tomorrow, atmospheric instability will cause brief, intense, and localized showers in some areas. Over the weekend, as a low-pressure system approaches, rain clouds will develop more systematically.

Let us look at the expected precipitation for tomorrow.

Up to 70 mm of rain is forecasted for the Chungcheong and Honam regions, while up to 80 mm is expected in the southern coast, southern Gangwon, and Yeongnam regions.

On Saturday, the day after tomorrow, anywhere from 5 to as much as 60 mm of rain is expected across the country.

Tropical nights are anticipated tonight in most areas, including Seoul.

However, daytime temperatures in the southern regions, where rain is forecasted tomorrow, will drop slightly, while Seoul will hover around 32°C (90°F), similar to today.

As rain falls over the weekend, the oppressive heat during both day and night will gradually subside.

Once the rain stops in the central regions on Sunday morning, a crisp autumn breeze will be felt. However, the rain in the southern regions will continue until next Monday, requiring preparations for heavy downpours.
