Police Officer Who Falsely Closed Missing Person Case Received National Police Agency Chief's Commendation a Month Later

Controversy is expected as it has been revealed that a current police officer arrested for falsely closing a missing person report received a commendation from the National Police Agency Chief for successfully locating a missing person a month after falsely closing the case involving a person named Jang Mi-ran.

According to the office of People Power Party lawmaker Park Sumin on the 26th, Police Officer A of the Jeju Seobu Police Station received a commendation from the National Police Agency Chief on June 26 for his "merit in locating a missing elderly person with dementia."

This was about a month after he falsely closed the missing person report regarding Jang.

It was also found that Police Officer A received a police station chief's commendation in September 2025 for rapidly locating an attempted suicide victim, and a regular year-end commendation from the head of the Jeju Provincial Police Agency in December of the same year, bringing his total number of awards and honors to 10 since 2020.

On the other hand, although the exact timeframe was not specified, it was revealed that Police Officer A had a history of being referred to a disciplinary committee after undergoing an inspection investigation for domestic violence.

Police Officer A is also under investigation on charges of secretly entering a women's restroom and filming.

In light of this background, critics point out that suspicions should be raised as to whether his past commendations may have been exaggerated or fabricated.

Previously, on May 15, Police Officer A received a report that "Jang left her accommodation and cannot be reached," but falsely closed the case just two and a half hours later as if he had made contact with Jang.

It was found that at the time, Police Officer A told Jang's boyfriend, who made the report, "I contacted Jang to confirm she is safe, and she asked not to disclose her location information," and deleted the related records.

In addition, he is accused of falsely closing a missing person case involving a man in his 60s received on the 2nd of last month using a method similar to the Jang case.
