Prosecutors investigating allegations that a former aide to a lawmaker accepted tens of millions of won in bribes have conducted a raid on the office of People Power Party Representative Baek Jong-hun.
The Anti-Corruption Investigation Division 1 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (led by Senior Prosecutor Kuk Won) dispatched prosecutors and investigators to Rep. Baek's office at the National Assembly building in Yeouido, Seoul, today (August 26) to secure relevant materials.
The raid is reportedly aimed at examining the work computer used by the former aide, identified only by the surname A, who is suspected of accepting bribes while working at the lawmaker's office.
A is suspected of receiving tens of millions of won worth of money and valuables in exchange for granting favors to a medical device company over a period of about three years starting in 2021.
Prosecutors suspect that A provided favors—such as hosting a policy forum organized by the lawmaker's office to help the company's products qualify for National Health Insurance coverage—and received fraudulent wages using the names of relatives and acquaintances.
Previously, prosecutors initiated a coercive investigation on June 17 by raiding A's residence and the medical device company in question.
Once the analysis of the seized materials is complete, prosecutors plan to summon A and other individuals involved in the case to investigate whether money and valuables were received and if they were linked to quid pro quo arrangements.
Meanwhile, it is reported that any connection between A's alleged corruption and Rep. Baek has not been confirmed.
