A man in his 30s of Chinese nationality, arrested on charges of murdering a Chinese female graduate student in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, has been confirmed to have worked as a university lecturer teaching classes at the university the victim attended.
Previously, the suspect, surnamed Jeong, was arrested yesterday evening (the 25th) on charges of murdering a Chinese international student, surnamed A.
It was found that Jeong taught two undergraduate major courses, "Rehabilitation Therapy" and "Neuroanatomy," during the previous spring semester at the university where student A was enrolled.
Jeong was also scheduled to teach two courses, "Human Anatomy" and "Musculoskeletal Disorders and Treatment," during the upcoming fall semester.
The university stated that since the suspect Jeong and the victim A shared the same Chinese nationality, Jeong likely was not a stranger to student A.
It was reported that a local gathering of Chinese international students shared posts suggesting that "Jeong was usually friendly with students and knew the victim."
Victim A had already secured employment in China and had reportedly entered Korea for the final time to receive her course completion certificate.
However, student A lost contact with her family and acquaintances starting from the afternoon of the 20th, when the graduation ceremony was held, and a missing person report was filed the next day.
Police tracked student A's last known whereabouts and conducted search operations, but her location could not be determined until she was found dead at the residence of the suspect Jeong five days after going missing.
Following the arrest of Jeong, police confirmed circumstances indicating that Jeong had mutilated and abandoned parts of student A's body, and are continuing search operations at suspected disposal sites such as nearby trash incinerators.
Police are investigating the exact nature of the relationship between Jeong and the victim, as well as the motive and details of the crime.
Police plan to apply for an arrest warrant for Jeong.
