It has been revealed that before she was found dead, the missing woman, Jang Mi-ran, was already logged into the internal police system as having died in a traffic accident. Police have placed four officials from the command line overseeing the case on administrative leave.

The missing person report for Jang Mi-ran was filed with the police at 6:43 PM on May 15.
Police Officer Boo, assigned to the Jeju Seobu Police Station and in charge of Jang's missing person case, closed the case just 2 hours and 33 minutes later at 9:16 PM.
As a result, the police search was called off after only two and a half hours.

It was revealed that after giving false explanations to Jang's partner, who filed the report, Officer Boo logged into the internal police system stating that Jang had "died in a traffic accident."
Under the police's Missing Person Profiling System, reasons for closing a case are largely divided into three categories: death, location found, and voluntary return. Officer Boo classified it under "death," and specifically as a "traffic accident death."
When an officer enters a missing person as "deceased" in the system, the case is closed and subsequently excluded from management targets.
The police believe that Officer Boo exploited the fact that entering "death" closes the case in the system, and fabricated the reason as a "traffic accident death."
Officer Boo also falsely recorded that he had "found the location" of a man in his 60s in a separate missing person case received in July, closing that case in a similar manner.
The Korean National Police Agency has placed four officials from the command line related to Officer Boo's false closure of missing person cases—including the former and current heads of the Jeju Seobu Police Station, the head of the detective division, and the head of the missing persons team—on administrative leave. Authorities plan to uncover the full truth behind the case handling process through a massive inspection of these officials.
