The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced today (the 25th) that it has designated an area of approximately 1.05 million pyeong (3.47 square kilometers) in Hyeongye-myeon, Muan-gun, South Jeolla-Gwangju Unified Special City, as a candidate site for the Muan National Industrial Complex.
This designation is a follow-up measure to the "rapid designation of the Muan National Industrial Complex" included in the announcement made by the six-party consultative body for the relocation of the Gwangju military airport on December 17 of last year.
At the request of South Jeolla-Gwangju, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport comprehensively reviewed the necessity of the project, the suitability of the location, and its impact on balanced regional development through the Industrial Location Policy Deliberation Committee—comprising relevant ministries and private experts—and finalized the site as a candidate location.
The ministry explained that this candidate site designation lays the groundwork for creating an industrial hub that will drive new growth in the Honam region.
South Jeolla-Gwangju and Muan-gun plan to focus on attracting businesses and securing actual demand centering on regional strategic industries, while specifying follow-up procedures for the creation of the industrial complex.
"We will closely cooperate with local governments and relevant agencies during the establishment of the industrial complex plan, and seamlessly carry out the second phase of the Honam High-Speed Railway project—including Muan Airport Station—with the goal of completion by 2027," the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport stated. "We will support its development into a logistics and industrial hub linked with Muan International Airport and railways."
