The government is looking into whether napa cabbages treated with formaldehyde, a Group 1 carcinogen, have been imported into South Korea.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated today (the 24th) that it is "verifying whether the formaldehyde-treated Chinese napa cabbages were exported to South Korea through the Chinese Embassy and other channels."
The ministry added, "We have implemented strengthened import inspection measures for Chinese napa cabbages and plan to take necessary actions once additional information is confirmed."
Previously, it was revealed that formaldehyde was used to maintain the freshness of napa cabbages in some rural areas of China, prompting the Chinese central government to order a special investigation.
While tracing the distribution routes of the problematic cabbages locally, the Chinese government is also conducting random sampling inspections and market surveys across various regions in China.
