A man in his 20s has been arrested by police for disguising himself with an androgynous appearance and entering a women's locker room at the Caribbean Bay water park to secretly film occupants.
The Yongin Dongbu Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 22nd that it has applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A, a man in his 20s, on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (filming using cameras and other devices, and trespassing on public-use places for sexual purposes).
Mr. A, who is currently unemployed, is accused of sneaking into the women's locker room at Everland's Caribbean Bay in Yongin on two occasions—in mid-July and on the 30th of the same month—to illegally film visitors.
Police investigations revealed that at the time of the crimes, Mr. A wore a short-cut wig, sunglasses, and a mask to create an androgynous appearance that made it difficult to determine his gender before trespassing into the women's locker room.
He entered the water park in the afternoon, stayed for about four to five hours, and committed the crimes using a mobile phone and small filming equipment.
However, the exact amount of time he spent inside the locker room has not yet been confirmed.
According to police, Mr. A stated during questioning, "I did it out of curiosity to view them by myself," adding that, "I did not distribute the videos externally."
After receiving a report from Caribbean Bay officials on the 30th of last month, police retraced Mr. A's escape route using surrounding CCTV footage.
After identifying his identity and residence, police arrested him at his home in Seoul at around 4:40 PM on the 21st, about 20 days after he went on the run.
Police seized the mobile phone used in the crime, small filming equipment, and storage devices containing the illegal footage from Mr. A's home, and are currently analyzing them using digital forensics.
While two victims have been identified so far, the number of victims may increase depending on the forensic results.
Previously, on the afternoon of the 30th of last month, Mr. A aroused suspicion among visitors as he wandered around inside the women's locker room with his face covered.
When Mr. A pushed his sunglasses up at the demand of a visitor at the time, someone nearby shouted, "He's a man!" When a water park employee approached and asked for identification, Mr. A brushed the employee aside and fled outside.
Police plan to further investigate the exact scale of the illicit footage and whether it was distributed once the forensic results are available.
The schedule for Mr. A's pre-trial detention hearing (warrant substantive examination) has not yet been set.
