A group of individuals who impersonated police investigators to break into an officetel in Daejeon, brutally assault an online gambling site operator, and rob them of cash and valuables have been rounded up en masse.
The Daejeon Seobu Police Station announced today (August 21) that it has transferred six suspects, including A in their 30s, to the prosecutors' office under detention on charges of robbery and injury.
Suspect A and the others are accused of breaking into an officetel in Mannyeon-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, at around 2:00 AM on July 10, assaulting B, an online gambling site operator in their 20s, and fleeing with 32.3 million won in total assets, including 31 million won in cash and two computer mainframes worth 1.3 million won.
The suspects, all in their 20s and 30s, planned the crime after obtaining intelligence that a business centering around funds tied to A was located in Daejeon.
Posing as police investigators, they forced their way into the officetel office, assaulted B, and intimidated two other employees by forcing them to face the wall before stealing the valuables and escaping.
During this process, they used expandable batons and wore brass knuckles to indiscriminately beat B, inflicting injuries requiring five weeks of treatment, including an orbital fracture.
The suspects tracked the victims to identify the office unit. One of them acted as a lookout in a car, while the five others took the elevator up to carry out the crime.
Launching an investigation, the police tracked the suspects' movements and apprehended four of them. The remaining two were caught in Daejeon and Okcheon, North Chungcheong Province, respectively, following a two-week manhunt and were sequentially detained.
Investigations revealed that A, facing financial difficulties after a business A previously operated was forced to close due to police crackdowns and other reasons, gathered local senior and junior acquaintances to plot the crime.
The police seized the crime tools and 20.1 million won of the stolen cash from the suspects.
Concluding that the suspects plotted in advance to steal funds flowing into the business, the police forwarded all of them to the prosecution in custody.
