Actor Lee Kyu-hyung of the new Netflix series "Mousetrap" shared the amusing behind-the-scenes story of how he had to bulk up and then rapidly lose weight to build his character.
On the morning of the 20th, a press conference for the new Netflix series "Mousetrap" (written by Lee Jae-gon, directed by Kim Hong-sun) was held at Hotel Naru Seoul M Gallery in Mapo-gu, Seoul. Actors Ryu Jun Yeol, Sul Kyung-gu, and Lee Kyu-hyung, along with director Kim Hong-sun, attended the event to talk about the project.
Based on the hit webtoon of the same name, "Mousetrap" is a tracking thriller that unfolds as Moon-jae (played by Ryu Jun Yeol), a novelist whose name, face, and life are completely stolen by a mysterious entity known as "Mousetrap," teams up with No-ja (played by Sul Kyung-gu), a loan shark trying to recover lost money, and detective Soon-yong (played by Lee Kyu-hyung) to track down the true identity of Mousetrap.
Lee Kyu-hyung, who plays detective Soon-yong investigating the case after receiving a mysterious tip-off, shared, "Since the character is good at fighting and rough according to the script, I initially gained weight. However, with not much time left before filming, the director said, 'Why do you look like this? I wanted you to look sharp, so lose the weight again,'" recounting the absurd yet tense situation at the time.
Lee Kyu-hyung, who had to undergo rapid weight loss, drew laughter from the room by confessing honestly, "I inevitably had to borrow the power of modern medicine." When asked specifically whether that medical help was a "three-syllable" or "four-syllable" word, Lee Kyu-hyung candidly replied, "I tried both. I really worked hard to create the character the director wanted in terms of appearance."
In response, director Kim Hong-sun explained the reason for asking Lee Kyu-hyung to lose weight, saying, "Soon-yong is a sharp-tempered character with a lot of anger and complaints, so I naturally wanted a sharp appearance." He then expressed deep trust and satisfaction, stating, "Actor Lee Kyu-hyung used his wide acting spectrum to portray the role even better than expected."
Meanwhile, the 10-episode series "Mousetrap," which is drawing high expectations for the intense acting synergy between Ryu Jun Yeol, Sul Kyung-gu, and Lee Kyu-hyung, will be released via Netflix at 5 p.m. on the 28th.
