The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) criticized the People Power Party's behavior as "constantly moving the goalposts" after the provisional agreement reached by the parliamentary special committee on a state investigation to recount ballots at the Jamsil Olympic Park fell through today (August 18).
Lee Ju-hee, floor spokesperson for the DPK, made the remarks during a National Assembly briefing today, stating, "The People Power Party must clearly state to the public whether or not it intends to conduct a recount."
"First they said, 'Let's do it once the special counsel bill is agreed upon,' then once the special counsel bill passed, they said, 'Let's do it once the special counsel is appointed,' and now they are saying, 'The schedule must be set in consultation with the special counsel,'" she said, adding, "The special committee's on-site inspection and the special counsel's investigation are distinct procedures."
She went on to emphasize, "There is no legal basis or practical reason to tie the ballot recount to the special counsel. If the People Power Party continues to obstruct the pursuit of the truth, the public will not forgive them."
Earlier, the special committee tentatively agreed to re-verify ballots stored at the Songpa-gu counting center today, but the plan fell through as some members of the People Power Party continued to demand that the recount be conducted in the presence of the special counsel for the electoral commission.
