U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un responded to his call for dialogue between the United States and North Korea.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on the 17th local time, when asked why there had been no reaction from Chairman Kim Jong-un to his dialogue proposal, President Trump asked in return, "How do you know he didn't respond?"
When reporters then asked, "So Chairman Kim has responded?", President Trump replied, "Yes, he has."
To a question pointing out that scaling back joint drills could mean prioritizing North Korea's interests over those of allies, President Trump answered, "I am making the situation much safer."
President Trump did not specify when or in what manner Chairman Kim responded.
The previous day, he announced via his social media that he had instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to significantly scale down the size of the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises. He also maintained that he and Chairman Kim share a good relationship, adding that joint drills could send inappropriate signals to North Korea.
