Rain to Expand Nationwide by Early Sunday, Caution Urged for Safety

Today (August 15), Liberation Day, strong showers pounded the Seoul metropolitan area.

With a massive influx of moisture causing atmospheric instability, localized downpours exceeding 50 mm per hour battered Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province.

Rain has already begun in the southern regions affected by a low-pressure system currently situated over the seas southwest of Jeju. As this system moves, the rain will expand nationwide by early tomorrow morning.

Looking at the expected rainfall amounts through the day after tomorrow, the central regions are forecast to receive 20 to up to 80 mm, while the southern regions will see heavier precipitation ranging from 50 to up to 150 mm.

Among these areas, heavy downpours exceeding 250 mm are anticipated around Mount Jirisan and the western southern coast of Gyeongsangnam-do, where strong southerly winds are flowing in.

The rain in the southern regions and Jeju will fluctuate in intensity until Monday morning.

Precipitation will come down very heavily at rates of 20 to 50 mm per hour, and over 70 mm per hour specifically along the southern coast.

While this is a welcome drought-relieving rain, it could also cause damage, so you must exercise special caution against safety accidents.

Tomorrow's morning low in Seoul will start at 24°C (75°F), and the daytime high in Gwangju will be 28°C (82°F). Although temperatures will be lower than today, high humidity will make it rather muggy.

This bout of rain will continue until Monday morning before stopping, but there is also a high possibility of scattered showers passing nationwide on Monday afternoon.
