The Democratic Party submitted a resolution urging the expulsion of People Power Party lawmaker Lee Jin-sook on the afternoon of today (the 14th).
Speaking to reporters after submitting the resolution today, Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Joo-hee criticized, saying, "She gathered figures who denigrate the spirit of May 18 and does not hesitate to deny even historically established facts, to the point where it is embarrassing to even call her a colleague."
She explained, "We submitted the expulsion resolution today with the intent that she must step down from her position as a lawmaker immediately, and that this must be finalized through a resolution of the National Assembly."
Lawmaker Park Kyun-taek, who was present, explained, "Since all Democratic Party lawmakers agreed to the resolution, the names of all Democratic Party lawmakers are included. You can consider this being pursued as a party line."
At the "Public Forum on the Re-examination of the May 18 Democratization Movement" jointly hosted yesterday by lawmaker Lee at the National Assembly Library with the civic group New History National Movement, remarks such as "disturbances" were made regarding the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.
For two consecutive days, the Democratic Party has launched fierce criticisms, calling it a "historical coup" and an "insult to the civic uprising."
Democratic Party Acting Leader and Floor Leader Han Byung-do said at a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly today, "Insulting under the guise of academia and re-examination the civic uprising that defended democracy with blood and tears against state violence is nothing more and nothing less than damaging historical truth and denying the legitimacy of the democratic republic."
He added, "The People Power Party should not brush this off as the personal deviation of lawmaker Lee Jin-sook, but must clarify its clear stance on the distortion of May 18 history," warning, "We hope they take responsible measures regarding lawmaker Lee. If they do not, we will step in."
Supreme Council Member Hwang Myung-sun also criticized at the Supreme Council meeting, saying, "A historical coup was committed in the National Assembly yesterday," and "At the May 18 re-examination forum forced through by lawmaker Lee along with a New Right group, absurd remarks were poured out, disparaging the May 18 Democratization Movement as a disturbance and glorifying Chun Doo-hwan, the mastermind of the massacre."
He went on to urge, "We can no longer leave unattended the sophistry of the far-right wearing the mask of freedom of expression," demanding, "The People Power Party must apologize for the anti-democratic absurdities and behaviors of its affiliated lawmaker and force her to resign immediately."
Supreme Council Member Park Gyu-hwan also sharply criticized, saying, "The National Assembly, which is the site of overcoming internal rebellion and the temple of public opinion, has been defiled by anti-historical and anti-democratic absurd remarks and behaviors that denigrate and insult May 18." He added, "The National Assembly must also immediately initiate procedures to expel Lee Jin-sook and strip her of her lawmaker position swiftly. We hope the National Assembly Speaker also immediately dismisses the director of the National Assembly Library who permitted the hosting of this depraved event."
