At around 11:00 AM today (August 14), a man in his 50s accused of stalking and killing his former romantic partner appeared for his pre-trial detention hearing.
The Seongnam Jungwon Police Station requested an arrest warrant yesterday for the man in his 50s, identified as A, on charges of retaliatory murder under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes.
A is accused of using a weapon he had prepared in advance to murder his ex-partner, a woman in her 60s identified as B, on a street in Jungwon-gu, Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, on the 5th of last month.
It was reported that A self-harmed following the crime and was hospitalized, before being discharged the day before yesterday to undergo police questioning.
Police believe that A committed the crime out of resentment after being referred to the prosecution for stalking B.
Previously, after A refused to accept their breakup and persistently demanded they meet again, B filed a complaint against him for stalking on June 10.
It was determined that after the case was forwarded to the prosecution, A premeditated the crime by purchasing a weapon in advance.
Police have secured statements from A claiming that it was an "accidental incident" and not a premeditated crime.
A's detention status is expected to be decided later tonight.
