Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI has made a full-scale entry into the AI agent market, offering tools that perform tasks on behalf of users.
xAI announced on the 11th, local time, that it is releasing its AI agent Grokbot as a beta version.
Unlike traditional chatbots that simply answer questions or generate documents, Grokbot is a tool that directly accesses various software and emails to perform tasks on behalf of human users.
Describing how to use Grokbot, xAI stated, "You can message it just like you would a colleague and hand off tasks," adding, "It completes tasks from start to finish and only contacts the user when approval is needed."
Because it operates in the cloud, it continues performing tasks even when the laptop is closed or the user is away. Collaborative workflows are also possible, where multiple bots exchange messages with one another to divide up work.
xAI explained that Grokbot was originally developed as an internal prototype for use within the company, but it quickly spread across the entire organization.
Grokbot becomes available starting today on desktop and the iPhone operating system, rolling out sequentially beginning with paid subscribers.
AI developers have been rushing to release office-use AI agent tools since early this year.
Some of these tools boast such exceptional performance that they have sparked the so-called "SaaS-pocalypse" outlook, suggesting they could disrupt and encroach upon existing software companies.
In the office AI agent market, Grokbot is expected to compete with Anthropic's Claude Cowork, OpenAI's ChatGPT Work, and Google's Gemini Enterprise Agent, among others.
Grokbot is a tool that was developed under the internal code name "Sandra" by Cursor, a startup currently undergoing acquisition by SpaceX, the parent company of xAI.
As the acquisition of Cursor is expected to close soon, US tech media outlet The Information recently reported that SpaceX is considering changing Cursor's branding to Grok, xAI's AI model.
