The Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education announced on the 11th that it will comprehensively check and investigate the factual relations and handling procedures regarding the 2025 suicide attempt by an elementary school student, as well as the overall student protection and support process. Based on the results, the office plans to prepare necessary follow-up measures and improvement plans.
The education office also emphasized that it will actively support the psychological stability of students and the recovery of the school community by providing necessary psychological counseling not only to the victimized student but also to students who witnessed the suicide attempt. It will also formulate support measures for class relationship recovery education, strengthening human rights education throughout the school, and restoring the educational community.
The office added that it is prioritizing student safety and protection and striving to process the relevant case objectively and fairly in accordance with established procedures.
The education office explained that while the school shared the situation with the Office of Education via phone call at the time and implemented measures to protect the student—such as notifying guardians, holding emergency meetings, and providing counseling support—it has identified areas where formal document reporting and record management were insufficient.
In addition, the school violence countermeasures deliberation committee distributed the case investigation report, confirmation statements and testimonies from the involved students and guardians, witness accounts, and additional materials submitted by the victim's guardian at the scene on the day of the incident to the committee members, and deliberated and resolved the matter after a comprehensive review, the office stated.
