Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a message of condolence to Colombia following a recent powerful earthquake.
According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 11th, President Xi sent a condolence message to Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella earlier in the day.
President Xi stated, "I was shocked to hear that a strong earthquake occurred in Colombia, causing severe casualties and property loss. On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I express my deep condolences to the victims and send my sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and the injured."
He added, "I believe that under the leadership of the Colombian government led by President Abelardo de la Espriella, the Colombian people will surely unite as one to overcome the disaster and rebuild their homes as soon as possible."
The China International Development Cooperation Agency, an organization directly under China's State Council, stated its intention to provide humanitarian relief assistance to Colombia.
A spokesperson for the agency said on the same day, "We are closely monitoring the earthquake disaster situation. Depending on the needs of the Colombian side, we wish to support Colombia's earthquake relief efforts by providing assistance to the best of our ability in an appropriate manner."
It was tallied that at least 164 people died in the magnitude 7.4 strong earthquake that struck western Colombia at 7:34 AM on the 10th (local time).
According to the Colombian Geological Survey (SGC), this earthquake is the largest to hit Colombia in the 21st century.
