On the morning of the day before yesterday (August 9), a turtle measuring about 30 cm in length was found in a drainage ditch in front of a cafe at a resort in Gijang-gun, Busan.
A resident who spotted the turtle while taking a walk stated that its shell was densely covered with white writing, including a home address, wishes, and people's names, and presumed it was a turtle released into the wild by someone.
When the resident returned to the scene a few hours later, the turtle was gone.
Upon seeing the photos, experts estimated that the turtle might be an ecosystem-disturbing species.
An animal protection group pointed out that people may have chosen a turtle because softshell turtles, which are commonly used for release, have become harder to obtain, emphasizing that ecosystem-disturbing species must not be released into nature arbitrarily.
In fact, unauthorized release of ecosystem-disturbing species into streams or coastal areas can result in fines or criminal punishment.
The act of writing on a turtle's shell can also be classified as an act of harming an animal and may be subject to punishment.
