U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at expanding domestic production of polysilicon, a key raw material for semiconductors.
During the signing ceremony for the executive order on the 6th (local time), a White House official stated, "This is a series of trade and tariff measures based on Section 232 [of the Trade Expansion Act]."
The official added, "It is designed to properly support the domestic polysilicon manufacturing industry and protect it from foreign dumping and threats."
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said at the event, "Polysilicon is a fundamental raw material required to make silicon wafers, which are used for chips going into AI chips and mobile phones," noting that this measure will increase domestic production of polysilicon in the U.S.
Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act grants the president the authority to restrict imports through appropriate measures, such as tariffs, if it is determined that the import of a specific item threatens national security.
While earlier projections suggested the executive order would include measures to impose tariffs on foreign polysilicon, specific details regarding whether tariffs will be levied and their rates have not yet been released.
