North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile toward the East Sea today (August 6).
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced that it detected a short-range ballistic missile launched from the vicinity of Wonsan toward the East Sea at around 5 p.m. today (August 6).
The JCS stated, "While our military has strengthened surveillance and vigilance in preparation for additional launches, South Korea, the US, and Japan are maintaining a full readiness posture by closely sharing information regarding North Korea's ballistic missile."
This marks North Korea's 10th ballistic missile launch of this year, and the first in 42 days.
Previously, on June 25, North Korea conducted test firings of tactical weapons targeting South Korea, including tactical ballistic missiles presumed to be close-range ballistic missiles (CRBMs) named Hwasong-11Ra and 155mm extended-range self-propelled artillery shells, under the observation of state leader Kim Jong Un.
This latest launch comes ahead of the South Korea-US joint military exercise, Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS), which is expected to be held this month.
North Korea has consistently condemned joint military exercises between South Korea and the US, as well as the deployment of US strategic assets during these periods, labeling them as rehearsals for an invasion of the North.
