▲ Doosan Bears helmets are placed at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Songpa-gu, Seoul, on August 5, after the KBO canceled all first- and second-division games scheduled for today and tomorrow due to the scorching heatwave sweeping across the country.
Professional baseball is taking a "summer break" through this weekend in the wake of the heatwave that has struck the nation.
The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), general managers of the 10 clubs, and Jang Dong-chul, secretary general of the Korea Professional Baseball Players Association, held an emergency executive committee meeting on the heatwave countermeasures at the Baseball Hall in Dogok-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, today and announced that all 15 games scheduled to be held at five stadiums across the country from August 7 to August 9 will be canceled.
Previously, the KBO office canceled all professional baseball games on August 5 and 6 to ensure the safety of spectators and players.
As a result, the total number of games canceled due to the heatwave this season has increased to 30.
Over the weekend, the KBO office and the 10 clubs plan to prepare detailed heatwave countermeasures and facilities before resuming the league on August 11.
Game start times will also be adjusted.
The game start times, which were previously set at 6:30 PM on weekdays and 6:00 PM on weekends, will be fixed at 7:00 PM for both weekdays and weekends for the time being.
As an exception, games held at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul will start at 7:00 PM on weekdays, 6:00 PM on Saturdays, and 2:00 PM on Sundays depending on broadcasting schedules.
In addition, the KBO office decided to establish a cooling time, similar to a cleaning time, to protect players and spectators.
