Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province announced on the 3rd that the number of members for its citizen-participatory carbon-neutrality practice movement, the "Climate Righteous Army," has surpassed 20,000.
Launched in September 2021, the Gwangmyeong Climate Righteous Army is a citizen movement that practices carbon neutrality in daily life to combat the crisis of global warming.
Membership has steadily increased by about 5,000 each year, reaching 5,000 in September 2023, 10,000 in September 2024, 15,000 in August 2025, and breaking the 20,000 mark on the 23rd of last month.
The cumulative verification count for the "Carbon Piggy Bank"—which rewards participants with up to 100,000 won annually for practicing 24 eco-friendly habits such as using tumblers and reusable shopping bags and properly separating recyclables—reached 2.17 million cases as of the 30th of last month.
This is equivalent to reducing approximately 978 tons of greenhouse gases, which has the same effect as planting about 270,000 ten-year-old trees.
Gwangmyeong plans to launch a dedicated Carbon Piggy Bank app in October and introduce an automatic electronic receipt verification feature for small business stores to enhance convenience for citizens.
