Why is Apple not fully diving into the AI infrastructure investment competition, even though it is failing to lead the frontier AI model race like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic? In this "Oh! Graph" video, we analyzed five graphs covering conflicts with memory suppliers, trade secret lawsuits with OpenAI, big tech data center capital expenditures, and on-device AI and model lightweighting technologies.
While other big tech companies are building larger and more AI data centers, Apple is focusing on its hardware ecosystem.
This can also be interpreted as a strategy to utilize models from OpenAI or Google as needed rather than directly building frontier models, and to secure small, efficient AI models that operate inside smartphones in the long run.
By examining local AI demand through the Mac mini, the revamp of Siri AI, and PrismML's model compression technology cases together, we explore whether Apple has truly fallen behind in the AI competition or is simply waiting for the era of on-device AI.
