President Lee Jae-myung is set to receive policy briefings from foreign affairs and national security-related ministries, as well as the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, and the Korean National Police Agency.
Starting at 10:00 a.m. today (August 5), President Lee will receive policy reports from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (including the Overseas Koreans Agency), the Ministry of Unification, the Ministry of National Defense (including the Military Manpower Administration and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration), and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
Discussions are expected to touch upon South Korea's diplomatic strategy amid the volatile international situation caused by the Middle East war, as well as the recently controversial issue of military discipline lapses.
Beginning at 2:00 p.m., policy briefings will be held sequentially for the Ministry of Education, the National Education Commission, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (including the Korea Heritage Service). From 4:20 p.m., reports will follow from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (including the Korean National Police Agency and the National Fire Agency), the Ministry of Personnel Management, the Ministry of Justice (including the Supreme Prosecutors' Office), the Ministry of Government Legislation, and the Office for Government Policy Coordination.
As the revision bill for the Criminal Procedure Act—which aims to abolish prosecutors' direct and supplementary investigation powers—passed through the Cabinet meeting yesterday (August 4), discussions are likely to focus on ways to stably settle the new criminal justice system following the complete separation of investigation and indictment.
President Lee's policy briefings for the second half of the year are being conducted over a total of four days.
Previously, President Lee received policy reports from some ministries on July 15 and 16 before leaving for an overseas trip. On the day after his return, he listened to policy briefings from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the Korea Meteorological Administration, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and the Fair Trade Commission.
The entire scope of this round of policy briefings covers 140 public institutions, including 19 ministries, 6 agencies, 18 administrations, and 7 committees.
