North Korea's Workers' Party Department Director Kim Yo-jong has warned that Japan is reorganizing its military deployments into a preemptive strike-oriented and overseas invasion-capable posture, adding that North Korea will establish additional military options in response.
Kim released the remarks through the Korean Central News Agency today (August 5) in a statement titled "Possession of Preemptive Strike Capabilities by War Criminal State Japan is a Major Threat Destroying International Peace and Stability," stating that she was issuing the position under authorization.
North Korea took issue with actions by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, such as its Tomahawk cruise missile test-firing conducted in the Pacific Ocean on July 28 (local time) and its participation in U.S.-led joint exercises held in the Philippines.
Kim argued that these actions "demonstrate that Japan's maneuvers, which formalized the possession of preemptive strike capabilities through the revision of its National Security Strategy at the end of 2022, are entering an actual criminal phase."
She also protested, stating, "What is more unforgivable is that the United States is standing behind Japan's dangerous military provocations."
She emphasized, "Voices of condemnation and warning alone cannot cool down the heated renewed invasion ambitions of the island nation's race. We must make them deeply regret it. We will never stand by and watch Japan's military evolution process."
Analysts interpret Kim's statement as an expression of vigilance against Japan's military moves while simultaneously intending to use them as a justification for strengthening North Korea's armed forces.
