Cuba experienced its highest number of anti-government protests and complaints on record last July amid a series of major blackouts.
According to the Cuba Conflict Observatory (OCC), an anti-government non-profit organization, on the 4th local time, the number of anti-government protests both online and offline reached 1,415 during the month of July.
Street protests accounted for 72 cases, while online protests totaled 1,343 cases.
By category, resistance and challenges to the state system were the most frequent at 520 cases, followed by protests over paralyzed public services (320 cases), accusations of government repression and crackdowns (219 cases), grievances over food shortages and soaring prices (130 cases), and security instability and violent crime (121 cases).
As the situation escalated, Cuban authorities deployed heavily armed Ministry of Interior special forces, the "Boinas Negras" (Black Berets), onto the streets to tighten control.
Amid this heavy control, reports of government repression and human rights violations submitted to human rights organizations and others during July alone surged 45 percent from the previous month to 219 cases.
