A teenager has been apprehended by police for threatening a severely intellectually disabled person, forcing them to take out a loan, extorting money, and even confining them.
The Seogwipo Police Station in Jeju announced that it has booked and is investigating a teenager, referred to as A, on charges of extortion, fraud, and confinement.
A is suspected of threatening B, a person in their 20s with a severe intellectual disability, at a cafe in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City, at around 3:00 PM on July 29, and extorting hundreds of thousands of won.
A is also accused of forcing B to sign up for Sunshine Loan, a microfinance loan product for low-income earners, to secure a loan of several million won and then having the funds transferred.
Following this, A moved with B to an internet cafe in Seogwipo and threatened that B would not be allowed to go home until they brought additional money.
Police rushed to the scene after receiving a report from a protection agency that was in contact with B, and arrested A.
According to the police investigation, A committed the crime under the pretext that A's front tooth had broken while boxing sparring with B during the summer of last year.
It is reported that A has denied the allegations, claiming that A and B were close senior and junior acquaintances and that the actions were mutually agreed upon.
B has reportedly stated that they had previously transferred money to A as well.
Police applied for an arrest warrant for A due to concerns of reoffending, but the prosecution dismissed it.
Although the incident is not classified as stalking, the police determined that protective measures for the victim are necessary and plan to apply for emergency urgent measures to prohibit A from approaching the victim's residence and blocking contact through telecommunications.
