The film "The Intern," starring actors Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee, has thrown its hat into the ring for this year's Chuseok holiday box office.
"The Intern" has confirmed its theatrical release for September 16 and released its first poster and trailer.
"The Intern" depicts an office life that transcends generations and ranks, beginning when Ki-ho (Choi Min-sik), a 37-year veteran senior intern, joins the company of Seon-woo (Han So-hee), who rapidly emerged as a dark horse in the fashion industry just three years after launch.
This is a remake of the Hollywood film of the same name, which was loved by global audiences in 2015 by grossing more than five times its production budget. Choi Min-sik takes on the role of the 37-year veteran intern originally played by Robert De Niro, while Han So-hee steps into the role of the rookie CEO originally played by Anne Hathaway.
The film is directed by Kim Do-young, who drew 3 million viewers with "If Only." Following her previous work, Director Kim has taken the helm of another remake, infusing Korean sentiment into a famous original film.
The first poster, released on the morning of the 4th, immediately catches the eye with the confident strides of senior intern Ki-ho (Choi Min-sik) and passionate CEO Seon-woo (Han So-hee) as they head to work side by side.
The accompanying trailer begins with Ki-ho experiencing a mix of nervousness and excitement as he heads to work for the first time in a long while. Asked about his strengths and weaknesses during an interview with Vice President Young-hwan (Kim Jun-han), Ki-ho cleverly responds, "My strength is that I have a lot of experience, and my weakness is that I am also old," eventually securing an intern employee ID card for the fashion startup Ututu. Dressed in a neat suit with a briefcase in hand, Ki-ho arrives at the office and meticulously takes out a cream bread, an oranda pastry, a thermos, a desk clock, a pencil case, and ink, showcasing a unique senior intern vibe right from the start.
Meanwhile, Ki-ho’s deadpan, serious expression as he searches for "how to work with MZ generations" and the meaning of the new slang term "gamdawi" (losing one's sense) stimulates curiosity among viewers about his bittersweet youngest-employee life as a veteran of society starting fresh as a senior intern at a new company.
On the other hand, laughter is brought forth by the appearance of Seon-woo, who looks flustered the moment she sees Ki-ho’s resume photo on a tablet handed to her by secretary Mina (Ryu Hye-young). "Who is this intimidating person, you know I don't get along with all the adults in this world," says CEO Seon-woo, showing discomfort toward the senior intern assigned directly under her, contrasted by Ki-ho politely introducing himself, "Hello, I am new intern Kim Ki-ho," previewing the unpredictable chemistry between the two.
"The Intern" has confirmed its release for the Chuseok season, setting it up to compete with films such as "Tazza: Beelzebub's Song" and "Revival Man."
