Extreme heat hovering around 40 degrees Celsius continued to grip the eastern regions today (August 3).
This week, the extreme heat is shifting toward the western regions.
As easterly winds continue to blow, heatwaves are expected to become even more intense in western areas, including Seoul.
Consequently, the severe heat warnings previously issued for the eastern regions have all been lifted, while new severe heat warnings were issued today for southern Seoul, Hanam, Osan, and Yeoju in Gyeonggi Province, as well as Gwangju and the South Jeolla Province (Jeonnam) region.
Tomorrow, daytime temperatures in these areas are projected to climb to 38°C in Seoul and Gwangju, and 39°C in Hanam. With easterly winds persisting throughout the week, extreme heat with temperatures hovering around 37°C will continue in Seoul.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Dolphin is expected to be blocked by the North Pacific high-pressure system guarding the Korean Peninsula, preventing it from moving northward and instead pushing it westward toward southern China.
On the other hand, occasional boisterous showers accompanied by sudden gusts of wind and lightning are expected in western areas, including southern Gyeonggi Province, tomorrow afternoon.
The east coast region will experience a few raindrops tomorrow due to the influence of easterly winds, while the rest of the country will remain clear, leaving few places to escape the heat.
Seoul has now experienced tropical nights for 12 consecutive days.
Tonight is also expected to remain sweltering.
Tomorrow's daytime temperatures will reach 38°C in Seoul and 34°C in Ulsan, making the western regions even hotter.
As extreme heat continues to focus on the western parts throughout the week, health management is more important than ever.
