Daegu, where a heavy heatwave warning was issued today (the 3rd), saw its daytime high temperature exceed 40°C for the first time this summer.
According to the Daegu Regional Meteorological Administration, as of 1:30 PM today, daytime highs reached 40.9°C in Buk-gu (Daegu), 40.1°C in Seo-gu (Daegu), 39°C in Goryeong, 39°C in Sinnyeong (Yeongcheon), 39°C in Dalseong (Daegu), and 38.9°C in Hayang (Gyeongsan).
The last time daytime temperatures in Daegu exceeded 40°C was on August 1, 1942.
However, the record high back then was measured at Daegu's representative observation station, whereas today's high of 40.1°C in Seo-gu, Daegu, was recorded using an Automatic Weather System (AWS).
As extreme heat has persisted for days with heatwave advisories and warnings issued across most areas of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do recently, many locations recorded perceived temperatures exceeding the average human body temperature today.
As of 1:30 PM, the highest perceived temperatures by region were 38.2°C in Goryeong, 37.6°C in Dalseong (Daegu), 37.5°C in Habin (Daegu), 37.4°C in Okpo (Daegu), and 37.3°C in Yeongyang.
With daytime temperatures rising to life-threatening levels, a man in his 20s suffering from heat exhaustion while engaging in outdoor activities in Daebong-dong, Jung-gu, at 11:30 AM today was transported to a hospital by emergency 119 paramedics.
Meteorological authorities explained that the ongoing heatwave in Daegu, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and other regions is caused by the dual influence of the Tibetan and North Pacific high-pressure systems covering the Korean Peninsula, coupled with clear skies and strong solar radiation.
Heavy heatwave warnings are currently in effect for Daegu (excluding Gunwi), as well as Gumi, Chilgok, northern Gimcheon, southeastern Andong, Gyeongsan, and Goryeong in Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Heatwave advisories have been issued for most other areas in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do where heavy heatwave warnings are not in place.
