The dramatic rescue mission of a white Jindo mix dog named "Kkeun-sun-i," who wandered the streets suffering from severe skin disease amid scorching heat waves, delivered a deep emotional resonance to viewers at home.
The rescue operation of Kkeun-sun-i, who was barely enduring with hair loss and raw, inflamed skin, was broadcast on the August 2 episode of SBS's "TV Animal Farm." The broadcast recorded a viewership rating of 4.6% and a peak momentary rating of 5.3% (based on metropolitan households by Nielsen Korea), with the moment the couple Soo-in rescued Kkeun-sun-i taking the spot as the "best one minute."
An unfamiliar white dog had appeared some time ago in front of the house of the couple Soo-in, who have been rescuing, treating, and embracing abandoned animals in Damyang, South Jeolla Province. Upon closer inspection, the dog was suffering from hair loss, raw sores all over its body, and severely swollen legs, making it difficult for her even to stand. Wishing that she would be "the last sick life they meet on the street," the couple named her "Kkeun-sun-i" and began taking care of her.
Given her strong wariness and the leash attached to her neck, it was necessary to check whether an owner existed. Carefully verifying the ownership of Kkeun-sun-i—who struggled to walk under a 33-degree Celsius (91°F) blazing sun while licking her stinging body—the production team and the couple set out on a full-scale rescue.
An initial direct rescue attempt failed due to Kkeun-sun-i snapping, but Soo-in switched to a method of cautiously luring her into the yard and, with the help of a professional rescue team, finally succeeded in transferring her.
Hospital examinations revealed that Kkeun-sun-i's immune system had collapsed due to demodectic mange and bacterial infections, leaving her suspected of sepsis alongside severe anemia, making a blood transfusion urgently critical. Fortunately, thanks to prompt treatment, she was able to be discharged a few days later with reduced swelling and a more comfortable expression.
Looking at Kkeun-sun-i as she recovered, Soo-in shared that she hopes the dog will eventually meet a good family and wanted to leave her with warm experiences of being with a family at home.
Meanwhile, SBS's "TV Animal Farm" airs every Sunday at 9:30 AM.
