The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has surpassed 3,500, with the spread continuing.
This marks the second-largest Ebola outbreak in history in terms of confirmed cases.
According to the DRC Ministry of Communication and Media on July 31 local time, as of the 29th, the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the DRC stood at 3,532, an increase of 90 from the previous day.
Among them, the death toll reached 1,556, recording a fatality rate of 44.1%.
Currently, 807 people are receiving isolated or inpatient treatment, and 626 have fully recovered.
This outbreak has surpassed the 2018–2020 outbreak (3,481 confirmed cases and 2,299 deaths), which was previously the largest Ebola outbreak within the DRC in terms of the number of confirmed cases.
Compared to all historical Ebola outbreaks, it is also the second-largest scale following the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic, which resulted in more than 28,000 confirmed cases and 11,000 deaths.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) have expressed concern that the spread of this current Ebola outbreak is faster than ever before.
Previously, the DRC, along with Uganda, declared an Ebola outbreak on May 15.
Unlike the DRC where the spread continues, Uganda recorded a total of 20 confirmed cases and 2 deaths, but its last confirmed patient was discharged on the 16th, and the country declared an end to the Ebola outbreak on the 28th.
