Tattoo establishments will soon be required to divide their spaces into procedure and cleaning areas, and use sterilized, single-use tools as a rule.
Ahead of the implementation of the Tattoo Act this coming October, the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Promotion Institute have established the "Standard Guidelines for Tattoo Procedures," which contain hygiene and safety rules as well as mandatory requirements.
According to the guidelines, tattoo shops must use walls or partitions to divide their spaces into a waiting area, a procedure area, and a cleaning and disinfection area.
In addition, equipment must be arranged in consideration of movement pathways, and hygiene management rules must be followed for each zone.
Tools used for procedures must be sterilized and disposable, and discarded immediately after use. If they must inevitably be reused, they must undergo essential cleaning and disinfection.
All kinds of consumables must also be disposable.
In particular, pigment cups and gauze are high-risk consumables and therefore must be sterilized and single-use.
Practitioners must properly follow guidelines on wearing personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks, and must wear sterilized gloves during procedures.
Before a procedure, practitioners must check the customer's identity and health status, and obtain a consent form. In cases with a history of bloodborne infectious diseases such as hepatitis B or C, the decision to proceed must be made only after verifying a medical opinion letter through consultation and treatment at a medical institution.
