On the evening of July 29 at 10:11 PM, an Avante passenger car driven by a man in his 20s, identified as A, struck a female pedestrian in her 50s with Japanese citizenship, identified as B, on a 10-lane round-trip road near the main gate of Chungnam National University in Gung-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon.
As a result of the accident, B was rescued in a state of cardiac arrest and transported to a nearby hospital, but ultimately passed away.
The driver, A, also sustained injuries from the impact of the crash after slamming into a nearby bus stop and is currently hospitalized.
It was confirmed that there were no additional casualties resulting from the secondary impact.
Police believe the accident occurred because A failed to properly spot B, who was jaywalking across the 10-lane road where there is no crosswalk, and are currently securing dashcam footage and other evidence to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident.
A police official stated, "It was confirmed that A was not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident," adding, "The accident site was a roadway without a crosswalk or traffic lights."
