Two middle school students have been caught by the police for riding an electric scooter on a street in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, and spitting on and cursing at multiple citizens they did not know.
Pyeongtaek Police Station announced today (the 29th) that they have arrested and investigated a teenager, identified as A, at the scene on charges of joint assault.
The police also booked and investigated another teenager, identified as B, on the same charges.
B is a juvenile delinquent aged 10 and older and under 14, meaning they are not subject to criminal punishment.
A and the other suspect are accused of spitting on, cursing at, and threatening eight citizens on the streets around Tongbokcheon Stream in Segyo-dong and in Bijeon-dong, Pyeongtaek, for about four hours starting from 5:57 p.m. on the 26th.
Investigations showed that they committed these acts against complete strangers while riding together on a single electric scooter.
It was found that the victims included an elderly person and a pregnant woman.
At the time, a total of nine 112 emergency reports complaining of similar damage were received around Pyeongtaek.
Following the successive reports, the police were dispatched to the scene, arrested A in the act, and accompanied B voluntarily for questioning.
They reportedly did not state a clear motive for the crime during police questioning.
A pregnant woman in her 30s who suffered the attack at the time expressed her distress, saying, "I was taking a walk when the suspects suddenly rode past on an electric scooter, spat on my face, and cursed loudly." She added, "Because of this, I haven't been able to sleep properly for days, and I suffer from severe psychological distress to the point where I am startled just seeing students of a similar age."
A police official stated, "After completing the initial investigations for both A and the other suspect, we handed them over to their guardians," adding, "We consider the act of going around spitting on pedestrians to fall under the charge of joint assault and are investigating the exact circumstances."
