The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees U.S. military operations against Iran, announced on the 28th local time that the Iranian military launched ballistic missiles targeting U.S. bases in the Middle East.
CENTCOM posted on X (formerly Twitter) that day, stating, "At 5:45 p.m. Eastern Time today, forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in a surprise attack targeting U.S. military bases in the Middle East."
It added, "All of Iran's missiles were successfully intercepted," and "U.S. forces remain vigilant and maintain a high level of readiness."
The reason behind the Iranian military's airstrikes targeting U.S. bases is not yet known.
The U.S. military had continued airstrikes against Iran for 13 consecutive days before halting them on the 24th, after which Iran had also suspended its retaliatory attacks against U.S. bases in the Middle East.
However, with Iran's preemptive attack today, the lull in armed conflict that had emphasized dialogue over the past five days has faced a crisis.
While armed exchanges were paused, President Donald Trump had forecasted that talks with Iran were ongoing and that the likelihood of reaching a deal was high, while also threatening to launch even stronger airstrikes against Iran should the negotiations fail.
