It was belatedly reported that Japanese mystery author Higashino Keigo, well-known in South Korea for bestsellers such as "The Miracles of the Namiya General Store" and "The Devotion of Suspect X," has passed away from colorectal cancer.
According to local media reports, including NHK, on July 27, author Higashino passed away on July 23 after battling colorectal cancer.
He was 68 years old.
Born in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, he graduated from Osaka Prefectural University and debuted in 1985 at the age of 27 with "After School."
This work won the Edogawa Rampo Award, the highest-prestige literary award for new mystery writers hosted by the Mystery Writers of Japan.
He left behind numerous works centered on mysteries and gained widespread popularity with his "Galileo" series, featuring a genius physicist solving cases, which saw its first installment published in 1998.
He is also well known for works such as "The Devotion of Suspect X" and "Journey Under the Midnight Sun," both of which were made into films in South Korea and Japan.
"The Miracles of the Namiya General Store" topped bestseller lists in South Korea for years, recording cumulative sales of over 1 million copies.
