The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced on July 27 that it plans to select 300 'Phone-Free School' pilot schools in three rounds this year.
The Phone-Free School is a student growth-centered policy that restricts the use of mobile phones unrelated to educational activities during school hours and redirects that time into the 'RAS Gyeonggi Arts, Sports, and Literature Education' initiative, which focuses on reading, arts, and sports.
Phone-Free School pilot institutions are operated voluntarily, centered around student councils.
The education office explained that rather than schools unilaterally confiscating mobile phones or imposing uniform rules, student councils examine the current state and problems of smartphone use in school life on their own and establish practical agreements together with school members.
Schools will directly plan and operate activities tailored to their conditions, such as phone-free declaration ceremonies and student campaigns, phone-free activities during breaks and lunchtimes, practice challenges with friends, establishment of school-specific smartphone usage agreements, and production of student promotional videos.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education plans to select 100 schools in the first round from tomorrow, July 28, to August 14.
Subsequently, the second recruitment will take place from September 1 to 14, and the third from September 28 to October 9.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education plans to discover and share best practices and expand voluntary participation by student councils and the educational community to spread a Gyeonggi-style phone-free school culture.
