Kim Joo-hyung finished in a tie for 20th at the PGA Tour 3M Open (total purse $8.8 million), moving up one spot in the FedEx Cup rankings.
On the final fourth round of the tournament held at TPC Twin Cities (par 71) in Blaine, Minnesota, on July 27 (Korean time), Kim shot 5-under 66 with six birdies and one bogey.
Recording a final score of 14-under 270, Kim wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 20th place.
His FedEx Cup ranking rose one notch from 35th to 34th.
To advance to the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first event of the PGA Tour playoffs, players must finish within the top 70.
After sinking his first birdie on the 4th hole (par 3), Kim recorded his first bogey on the 6th hole (par 5) when his second shot landed in a water hazard, resulting in a one-stroke penalty. However, he bounced back with consecutive birdies on the 7th and 8th holes.
Kim dropped a 4.5-meter birdie putt on the 12th hole (par 5), landed his second shot 1.2 meters from the hole for a birdie on the 16th hole (par 4), and capped off his round with a birdie on the final 18th hole (par 5), shaving 5 strokes off his score that day.
The 3M Open championship trophy went to Jackson Koivun (U.S.), a 2005-born player who turned professional last month.
Shooting a 5-under 66 in the fourth round, Koivun recorded a tournament total of 25-under 259, fending off a late charge by world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (U.S., 22-under 262), who shaved 8 strokes in the final round, to win by 3 strokes.
A former amateur world No. 1, Koivun tasted his first career victory in his fourth PGA Tour appearance since turning pro.
The winner's prize for this tournament is $1,584,000 (approx. 2.31 billion won).
Koivun dramatically vaulted his FedEx Cup ranking from 194th to 70th, keeping his hopes alive for a spot in the first playoff event.
Hideki Matsuyama (Japan) and Brian Harman (U.S., both at 20-under 264) tied for 3rd place, while Korean-American golfer Michael Kim (17-under 267) finished in a tie for 10th.
