Romania announced that it shot down another drone that violated its airspace today (July 25), following a similar incident the previous day.
According to AFP and Reuters, Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruta stated, "At 8:34 a.m. on the 25th, the military shot down another drone that illegally entered Romanian airspace."
Minister Miruta added that the drone was shot down about 9.6 kilometers west of Sfantu Gheorghe in the Danube Delta near the Ukrainian border.
He also disclosed on social media that the drone was detected by the Ministry of Defense's radar entering the airspace at 8:22 a.m. that day, after which Romanian F-16 fighter jets shot it down.
Romanian President Nicusor Dan previously stated on social media that Romanian F-16 fighter jets also shot down a drone that entered the country's airspace on the morning of the previous day.
July 24 marked the first time Romania shot down an externally intruding drone since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The Romanian Prosecutor's Office stated that an analysis of the wreckage revealed the drone belonged to Russia.
Because Romania shares a border of about 650 kilometers with Ukraine, Russian drones attacking Ukraine have frequently strayed off course and violated its airspace.
In May of last year, a Russian drone struck an apartment building in Galati in eastern Romania near Ukraine, injuring two residents.
