▲ China-Iran Foreign Ministers Meeting
Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chinese Foreign Minister, met with the Iranian Foreign Minister to call for the implementation of a ceasefire memorandum of understanding (MoU) concluded with the United States and urged negotiations.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Kyrgyzstan, Minister Wang met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and stated, "China is deeply concerned about the recent resurgence of tension and deterioration of the situation in the Middle East Gulf region."
Mentioning the ceasefire MoU between the United States and Iran, he emphasized, "It is a valuable achievement attained through the mediation of multiple parties, embodying the aspirations for peace of the people of Iran and the Middle East who wish to end the war and achieve stability. We must ensure that these past efforts do not go to waste."
He went on to stress, "The door to open negotiations must not be closed again, and if there is even a sliver of hope for peace, we must not give it up. The most urgent task at present is to adhere to the direction of resolving disputes through negotiations and return to implementing the shared understandings of the MoU."
Minister Wang emphasized that dialogue and negotiations between the parties should be resumed promptly, the Strait of Hormuz issue should be properly handled, and that relations among neighboring countries and the establishment of collective security among Gulf states should be promoted.
In turn, Minister Araghchi briefed Minister Wang on the recent situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region, arguing that "tensions have escalated because the United States violated the MoU agreed upon by both sides."
He stated, "Iran's willingness to negotiate has never changed, nor do we wish for the conflict to continue," while urging the U.S. side to keep its promises, exercise restraint, and seek a rational solution.
Minister Araghchi also noted, "At this critical juncture, it is vital for Iran and China, as comprehensive strategic partners, to strengthen communication and coordination," expressing hope that China will continue to play an important role in supporting efforts to de-escalate the situation.
