People Power Party Secretary-General Jung Hee-yong issued an apology regarding the physical altercation that broke out yesterday (July 23) during the process of assigning parliamentary standing committees, stating, "It destroyed dignity and order," and adding, "I am truly sorry to party members and the public."
It is reported that Representative Kwon Young-jin strongly raised objections by visiting Floor Leader Jung Jum-sik after the standing committee assignments were announced yesterday.
During this process, a physical clash reportedly occurred, with Representative Kwon grabbing Floor Leader Jung Jum-sik by the collar.
Speaking at a floor strategy meeting today, Secretary-General Jung criticized the incident, saying, "Yesterday, out of dissatisfaction with the standing committee assignments, someone grabbed the floor leader by the collar—a former floor leader, no less. Protests and physical violence must be distinguished."
He continued, "Party members are fighting on the streets and in the field to reclaim their damaged suffrage. At a time like this, our party showed behavior that collapsed dignity and order, and I am deeply apologetic to the party members and the public."
He added, "We will deal sternly with actions that damage the party's honor and dignity to ensure such incidents are never repeated."
Following a meeting of the floor deputy leaders regarding the violence, Floor Spokesperson Choi Su-jin stated, "We will convene a general meeting of lawmakers to request a public apology."
The People Power Party Secretariat Labor Union also issued a statement today, urging, "Protest and violence are different. The lawmaker in question must deeply reflect on his wrongdoing and apologize to the public and party members."
