Today (July 23) is Daeseop, the solar term meaning the "Great Heat."
Heavy monsoon rain will drench the central regions again today.
In particular, very heavy rain falling at a rate of 20 to up to 50 mm per hour will be concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area and the inland central-northern parts of Gangwon Province from early morning through the daytime.
Looking at expected rainfall amounts, up to 120 mm or more is forecasted for Incheon and northern Gyeonggi Province, up to 100 mm or more for northern Gangwon Province, and up to 80 mm for other parts of the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province.
Meanwhile, some southern regions will see sporadic showers this afternoon. Once the showers stop, humidity will rise even higher, leading to severe heat waves during the day and tropical nights into the night.
Tropical nights will occur overnight in most areas, including Seoul.
Daytime heat will temporarily subside in the central regions, but temperatures in the southern regions will soar to around 35°C (95°F).
Monsoon rain is expected to continue in the central regions through this weekend, and rain is also forecasted for the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province next Monday.
