A man in his 40s has been arrested in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, for driving under the influence and crashing into two police patrol cars, leaving four officers injured.
The Gimpo Police Station announced on Wednesday (July 22) that it is investigating the suspect, identified as A (40), on charges of special obstruction of justice resulting in injury and drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act.
A is accused of driving his SUV while intoxicated on a road in Yangchon-eup, Gimpo, at 10:13 p.m. on Tuesday (July 21), and striking patrol cars, which resulted in injuries to four officers, including Police Sergeant B.
According to the investigation, the suspect ignored police orders to stop after officers arrived at the scene following a report of suspected drunk driving, and subsequently rammed into two patrol cars in succession.
The accident left Sergeant B with a fractured wrist, while the other three officers were treated at a hospital for injuries including bruises.
It was also confirmed that one of the two patrol cars was damaged so severely that it is no longer operable.
Police arrested A at the scene and measured his blood alcohol concentration, which was at a level of 0.08% or higher, sufficient for the revocation of his driver's license.
A police official stated, "The suspect attempted to flee after spotting the patrol cars, leading to the accident," adding, "We are currently reviewing whether to request an arrest warrant."
