▲ Wilt Chamberlain's warm-up jacket sold for 120 million won
A warm-up jacket belonging to NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain (1936–1999), which a teenager bought for a bargain price at a thrift store, has been sold at auction for 120 million won.
The Associated Press reported that the jacket, purchased by a teenager named Quinn Brown for 3 dollars (approximately 4,200 won) at a thrift store this past January, was sold at a Sotheby's auction for 89,600 dollars (approximately 120 million won).
The teenager bought the Los Angeles Lakers jacket, which had Chamberlain's name on it, at a thrift store in Oregon, USA.
Brown, who had been reselling items bought at thrift stores online, began an online search and confirmed that the jacket was worn by Chamberlain during the 1972 NBA Finals.
Brown posted a photo of the jacket on social media, which led to Sotheby's contacting him and eventually putting it up for auction.
This is not the first time memorabilia related to Chamberlain has been sold at auction.
In 2023, the game-worn jersey Chamberlain wore during the 1972 Finals was sold for 4.9 million dollars (approximately 6.8 billion won).
Chamberlain, who played in the league from 1959 to 1973, won championship rings with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1967 and the Lakers in 1972.
While playing for Philadelphia in 1962, Chamberlain scored 100 points in a game against the New York Knicks, a record that still stands today as the highest single-game point total.
