Two Indonesian sailors who entered the country for employment purposes fell while attempting to escape from their lodging, resulting in one death and one serious injury.
According to the Busan Sasang Police Station on Tuesday (July 21), a man in his 20s and a man in his 30s, both Indonesian nationals, fell from the 8th floor of a motel in Sasang-gu, Busan, at 3:28 a.m. today.
At the time, they had tied together bedding from their room to create an improvised rope and were attempting to climb down from the window when they fell from a height of 21 meters (69 feet).
The man in his 20s died in the accident, and the man in his 30s was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
It is presumed that they were attempting to find work while staying in the country illegally without boarding their assigned vessels.
A total of 20 foreign nationals were staying at the motel, with 10 people in each of the two rooms.
The doors to the rooms had been locked from the outside by a maritime employment agency.
The individuals, who had arrived in the country the previous day (July 20) for the purpose of maritime employment, were reportedly waiting at the motel temporarily before departing for another country.
Police, who were dispatched following a report, have taken the remaining 18 foreign nationals to the police station for protection.
A police official stated, "We are currently investigating the specific circumstances of the accident," adding, "We plan to conduct a thorough investigation, involving the Metropolitan Investigation Unit, regarding the fact that the room doors were locked from the outside."
