Shin Jin-seo, a 9-dan professional and currently the world's top-ranked Go player, has secured his first victory against the AI KataGo after an initial loss.
Shin is the first player to defeat KataGo in an official match while receiving a two-stone handicap.
After suffering a crushing defeat in the first match two days ago, Shin restored pride for humanity in the second match, which was played with a two-stone handicap advantage.
Aside from a brief moment of instability in the mid-game, Shin maintained a perfect sequence of moves, concluding the grueling 4-hour and 50-minute battle of 290 moves with a 4.5-point victory.
As KataGo, the world's most advanced Go AI, has virtually never lost an official match even when giving a two-stone handicap to human players, Shin's victory today (July 19) is considered an achievement comparable to Lee Sedol's win against AlphaGo in their fourth match 10 years ago.
The final third match will take place the day after tomorrow.
