The prosecution, currently investigating allegations that police downplayed the so-called 'Jang Yoon-gi case,' has begun questioning Police Inspector A, who led the initial investigation team, immediately upon his transfer to the prosecution today (July 15), SBS has learned.
The Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office special investigation team (led by Chief Prosecutor Kim Bong-jin) summoned Inspector A for questioning immediately after taking custody of him from the police today.
This marks the first time the prosecution has questioned Inspector A.
The police, who are also investigating the suspicions surrounding the 'Jang Yoon-gi case,' transferred the case of Inspector A—who was arrested on July 8 on charges including destruction of evidence—to the prosecution this morning, just before the expiration of his police detention period.
It is reported that the prosecution is questioning Inspector A regarding why the investigation team failed to secure cable ties, which serve as evidence supporting the intent of sexual assault in the case, and the circumstances behind orders to delete video footage of the search and seizure of the vehicle where the cable ties were found.
The prosecution plans to investigate whether there was any involvement from higher-level police officials in Inspector A's alleged destruction of evidence.
During four previous rounds of police questioning, Inspector A reportedly stated that his superior, Park, a Superintendent at the Gwangsan Police Station, had decided to apply the charge of ordinary murder, claiming there was "insufficient evidence for rape-murder," and that he had agreed to and followed that decision.
Regarding this, Inspector A also reportedly stated, "I have never once reported this in person to Kim, a Superintendent General at the Gwangsan Police Station."
The prosecution questioned Superintendent Park, who was the head of the detective division at the Gwangsan Police Station during the 'Jang Yoon-gi case' investigation, on July 13, and plans to summon Superintendent General Kim, who was the chief of the Gwangsan Police Station at the time, for questioning in the near future.
