A battery production joint venture between SK On and Hyundai Motor Group has begun operations at its North American plant and started supplying batteries to Hyundai Motor's factory in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) reported on July 14 (local time).
The company, known as HSBMA (Hyundai SK Battery Manufacturing America), is a joint venture established in 2023 with a total joint investment of 5 billion dollars from both Hyundai and SK On.
The company stated that the plant, built in Bartow County, Georgia, entered mass production last month and has begun supplying batteries to the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) located in Savannah, Georgia.
The 920,000-pyeong facility currently employs 3,500 people and is expected to have an annual production capacity of 35 gigawatt-hours (GWh), enough to power approximately 300,000 electric vehicles.
A company spokesperson stated, "We are currently in the early stages of battery production and will continue to increase production volume moving forward."
The state of Georgia provided 641 million dollars in tax incentives and subsidies to attract the company.
Previously, in April 2023, Hyundai Motor Group announced that battery cells produced at HSBMA would be manufactured into battery packs by Hyundai Mobis and supplied entirely to Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis electric vehicles produced in the United States.
In Georgia, SK Battery America, established by SK On, is already producing electric vehicle batteries and components.
The AJC also reported that a battery plant joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution was under construction near the Hyundai Motor Metaplant America in Georgia, but construction had been delayed last year due to the mass detention of South Korean nationals by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The AJC assessed that "HSBMA's battery supply to the Hyundai Metaplant is significant in establishing Georgia's electric vehicle production ecosystem and diversifying supply chains."
